Green prefabricated homes take advantage of the construction system to maximize sustainability.  Because they are built in a factory manufactures can  control the construction process, meaning that there is less material waste because there can be high precision in the planning and use.

Green materials that are usually hard to find can be bought in bulk and used on multiple jobs, which means that there areno shortcuts due to material unavailability. Once  thesections are complete there is only the delivery  of the sections, rather than  separate deliveries for every material, to the site, and this reduces potential pollution from  transportationm as well as creatin less site disturbance during construction.

Beacause the prefab home comes to the site in sections there is no need for stockpiles of materials or staging areas on the construction site.  In most cases the only site areas that need to be disturbed are the footprint and a drive for the delivery and placing of the sections.

The Benefits of Prefabricated Homes

・       The benefits of prefabricated homes versus traditional homes include improved energy efficiency,  reduced environmental impacts, reduction in  resources, faster construction, and potential cost  savings.

・       By reducing the energy consumption of homes, CO2 from power generation is reduced. Material use is also reduced using prefabricated panels and  components. When a component is made in the  factory, the process can be optimised to reduce and use offcuts as well as recycle unused material.

・       Prefabricated homes use fewer resources such as labour and equipment when compared to traditional  buildings. Since assembly at the site is minimal,  fewer workers are needed.

・       The equipment is also reduced since the home is either delivered in a few sections or as panel assemblies with the holes for  windows and doors already pre-cut.

Construction times of prefabricated homes can vary immensely. For a completely prefabricated  home it may only a couple of days to finish the home  once it is delivered. For a home using SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) the wall and roof assemblies take less than two weeks, compared to three weeks for a traditional home. The cost of a prefabricated home can cost more or less than a traditional home, but since there are so many options for  prefabricated homes, you can choose high-end custom  home or something more standard to save money.
