Málaga’s most distinctive and historic buildings will throw open their doors to the public in November. Open House Málaga, which takes place between November 18-20, offers people the opportunity to explore homes, galleries, and commercial spaces, many of which are normally closed to the public.

As Open House Málaga is also running a comprehensive programme of tours and events. More than 40 events take in every aspect of history and architecture in the city, from Roman amphitheatres to the Moorish legacy up to the regeneration of formally neglected districts such as Soho. Round table workshops, conferences and musical recitals are also part of the busy weekend.

This is the first time that the event has been held in Malaga, but cities including London and New York have been hosting “Open House” events for over a decade. In Spain, Madrid has already held successful Open House weekends, part of the international community of Open House Worldwide, the first global network of architecture festivals enjoyed by millions.

This is a unique opportunity to appreciate Málaga from a different perspective. The city’s fascinating mix of colours, flavours and people will be examined and explained with the help of architects, historians and professionals who will provide talks and tours during the weekend.

The comprehensive list of buildings open to the public during include Open House Málaga include recognised landmarks such as the Pompidou Centre Málaga, the Museo Picasso and the Roman theatre. There is also a fascinating chance to explore some of the lesser known spaces and structures, including the English Cemetery, the beautifully decorated 17th century Camarin de las Monjas and the Casa en el Monte, a contemporary house that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings.

Guided tours are another important aspect of Open House Málaga. They include “Modernos en el Soho”, which takes in the extraordinary and inspiring transformation of this once neglected inner city district into a thriving cultural centre. During the tour, you will also discover the planning that went into this transformation from attracting creative businesses and galleries, pedestrianisation and lighting projects, and the award winning murals that give Soho its unique character.

Other walking tours take participants through the historic centre, while explaining the evolution of Malaga since its foundation and outlining some of the most important challenges that cities of the 21st century will face. Currently more than 65% of the world’s population live in cities and so social and environmental issues, sustainable development, the enhancement of public space and the safeguarding of cultural heritage are all vital parts of the dynamics urban living. Other tours include Calle Larios, the Alameda and a look at the distinctive hidden patios of the city.

Open House Málaga’s programme of events also includes live music and experiences. On the evening of November 17, the architect and professor at the Malaga School of Architecture, Luis Tejedor Fernández, will introduce a special concert at Malaga Cathedral, highlighting the architectural qualities of the Cathedral as a musical instrument. Following that the Choir of the College of Architects of Málaga, together with the “DeVoces” Ensemble of Marbella and the organists Antonio del Pino and Javier Villero will perform a carefully selected programme of pieces in what promises to be a very special evening.
